The 2009 Pre-Season games are over.  The easy part of the season is behind the Phantoms.  Now, the tough part begins.

The Phantoms start their journey into Del Rey League play and hopefully deep into the playoffs.  This time around there's a feeling of preparedness.  A bravado atmosphere fills the locker room.  The Phantoms feel they can challenge, and beat, the best in Division X.  It won't be easy, though.

Nowadays, with the competitive drive that fills most school's environments, the need for a winning program is undeniably a must situation if the school is going to be successful in this Football thing of ours.  Let's face it... We're all in it for the wins.  Yes, the piling up the stats and breaking records are great but the measuring tape always comes down to wins and not just against the weaker teams.  The real measure of character comes against the top teams in your division and even if you don't beat them, are you able to compete or do you give up when the going gets tough?  Did you leave it on the field?

This year's edition of Phantom Football has a renewed commitment to winning and is determined to change the fans' minds about their resolve.  No longer do you hear in the sidelines excuses but instead ways to work around the problem situations.  If one of the team members is having doubts, the others come around and help him work through it.  The coaching staff is more organized and drives the players to excel both as a player and as as individual.

  A Lesson Learned

Call it first game jitters. Call it lack of time to gel with new teammates. One thing last Friday's game against the San Gabriel Matadors cannot be called was a walk in the park.

A near capacity crowd welcomed the first game of the season full with anticipation since this year's edition of Phantom Football is chock full with talent and speed.

The Phantoms took the field and before they could get into a rhythm, got a punch in the mouth by a San Gabriel team whose intentions were to avenge last year's 38-14 loss at Saint Matthias' field.

Senior Trevor Olson, making his debut as the starting Quarterback, was rattled a bit at the beginning by a bull rushing Matador front line and his receivers were either jammed at the line or arrived late at the expected route.  Even then, the 6'5" transfer from Colorado finished the night with 212 Yds on the air with 2 TDs and no interceptions.

The Defensive unit was also caught off guard and the Matadors were running at will during the first quarter of the game.

Master tactician Kevin Pearson used his experience to rally his coaching staff and together settled down a Phantom team in need of some guidance.  Seeing their players on their heels forced the Phantom coaches to go back to the fundamentals of the game - Hitting & Blocking - and soon they were able to get the Phantoms to regain their composure and use their superior athletic ability and talent to dominate the Matadors.

By Halftime, the Phantoms were in command of the game and along the way, they found out that playing together is going to be the key to a successful season.

Junior Kristaan Ivory, Mr. Reliable, took the ball and shoved it down the opponents' throats and by game's end had amassed 182 Yds on the ground while scoring 2 TDs.

Blue Chip recruit Anthony Jefferson gave the crowd a glimpse of his potential and in a flash ran the ball 80 Yds for the Phantoms' last score of the night.  Jefferson ended the evening with 127 Yds on the air and 2 TDs.

What's the lesson learned you ask?  That in order to be successful, a team cannot take an opponent for granted and regardless of how much more talented your team is sometimes willpower and heart is all the other team needs in order to give you a lesson in humility.

This is not the end of the world, however, and the Phantoms should enjoy the fact that they were able to shake off the cobwebs, regroup and win the game.

Aug 29, 09 Purple vs. White Game

On a hot August summer morning, the players from Cathedral took the field and played a very spirited game where starting spots on the team were the prize.  Alas, this prize is only guaranteed for one week; at least right now.  Nothing is written in stone in Head Coach Kevin Pearson's book.  As a Phantom Player you must earn your spot on the roster each and every week.  This feeling did not go unnoticed by the Phantom players who were hitting, blocking and running with all their might.

Head Coach Kevin Pearson, always the perfectionist,  was looking at the areas of improvement and had these words of advice for his team; "We need a lot more work".  We need to get to the line quicker.  We need to get the ball to the receivers faster".  And just as Pearson was stating his observations, he grabbed Senior Receiver Tahj Hasson and showed him the proper route to run and how to avoid being jammed by the opposing cornerback.

On offense, Sophomore QB Mikail Poole is challenging Senior Trevor Olson, a Blue Chip Recruit, who transferred from Colorado for the starting spot and both players had a spectacular scrimmage against each other.  Olson brings more experience to the position and the position looks to be his to lose.  QB's and Strength & Conditioning Coach  Jeff Jefferson had this to say about the dueling QB's:  "A great competition.   A great battle between QB's.  It's like the USC battle between Corp and Barkley, albeit, no Mustain on the Cathedral roster.  Trevor Olson, a Senior transfer from Colorado brings a strong arm and maturity while Sophomore Mikail Poole seems to learn from the different themes and qualities Trevor possesses plus his natural talents will help the Cathedral program for his remaining two years of eligibility.  Mikail has the athletic ability and arm strength and all he needs to work on is the mental aspect of the game.

These QB's don't catch the ball themselves, though and  they can consider themselves lucky to have two of the most sought after receivers in the state; Senior Anthony Jefferson and Senior Tahj Hasson.  Together they will provide big targets and with their size and physicality they're expected to be able to overpower the opposing Cornerbacks.

On the other side of the field, Defensive Coach Knox was also looking to get more out of his players:  "We look ok.  We made a couple of mistakes.  Our Defensive Ends are going inside but it's something we can work out next week.  When asked if he had any breakout individuals in the team he answered: "I expect our seniors to be our leaders and the strength of the team.  No "I" in our team".

Coach Jeff Jefferson concurred with Coach Knox on the defensive efforts and had nothing but praise for the Defensive Unit: "The Defense in Wonderful.  They're flying around to the ball.  The defensive coaches get on the players to be very aggressive.  As you know, Defense wins balls games."

When asked for his opinion on the offense, Coach Jefferson said: "We have the feel of the game.  We have worked really hard during the week and have focused on echoing what the calls are and if you're asking whether the players have the feel of the game; they do and I really am happy for the scrimmage because I like live and I feel you can't get the job done unless you go live and this will give us an opportunity to evaluate the players afterwards."

Now, while the QB's were getting all the praise accolades, Jr. Running Back Kristaan Ivory kept doing what he does best: bowling over Defensive players while carrying the ball.

This year the Phantoms are loaded with talent and it looks like Coach Pearson may be able to breathe a little easier.  Just the same, nobody is giving away league titles and the Phantoms have their work cut out for them in the upcoming season.

The Phantoms travel next week to meet the San Gabriel Matadors at Alhambra's Moor Field.  Check the calendar for driving directions.
