Kickstart Your Heart: Harvard-Westlake Loses 24-21 on Missed Field Goal as Time Expires By Rod Myers - StudioCityPatch
The Wolverines drive 78 yards on four plays to the 2 in the final seconds, but Will Oliver misses a potential tying 19-yarder.

With one swift kick, a dream turned into a nightmare Saturday for Harvard-Westlake in a 24-21 loss to visiting Cathedral of L.A. that ended when Will Oliver's potential tying field goal from 19 yards was wide left as time expired – all in front of a homecoming crowd.

"I just hooked it left. That was all on me," said Oliver, considered one of the San Fernando Valley's top kickers.

Cathedral's Hayden Rettig connected with Jeffrey Farrar on a 6-yard touchdown pass with 35 seconds remaining to put the visiting Phantoms up 24-21

Then the real excitement began.

Its playoff chances slipping away by the moment, Harvard-Westlake's Max Heltzer drove the Wolverines 78 yards on three plays – all passes to Noor Fateh (10 receptions, 164 yards) – to put the ball on the 2 with eight seconds left.

Heltzer then tried to find Clinton Hooks in the right corner, but the pass fell incomplete, so Harvard-Westlake (2-4-1, 0-2) ended up going for the tie.

"This was a tough loss for us," Fateh said.

Heltzer completed 17 of 32 passes for 264 yards and three touchdowns, including a 39-yarder to Fateh and a 27-yarder to Lewis Dix.

"We were in a good position to win this game tonight," Heltzer said. "As the holder on that field goal try, it was real tough to watch it miss, but I feel bad for Will and we just have to get ready for next week."

Harvard-Westlake was hurting without running back Jamias Jones, who is sidelined with an ankle injury, one of several Wolverines on the mend.

"We did our very best to control the clock towards the very end of the game. We wanted to keep them off the field as much as possible as we knew they could come back on us," Harvard-Westlake coach Vic Eumont said. "In the end, we just could not close this game out."

After going 7-4 in the Del Rey League last year and qualifying for the playoffs, Harvard-Westlake is having a tougher time since moving up to the Mission League and the Western Division.

Nevertheless, Eumont is pleased with how hard Harvard-Westlake has worked to keep pace.

"We are so proud of these kids and the effort they continue to show us week after week," Harvard-Westlake coach Vic Eumont said. "We've got kids who are playing hard, but we're just out of veterans."

Rettig completed 22 of 38 for 259 yards and two touchdowns, and Kristaan Ivory had six receptions for 108 yards and a touchdown, as Cathedral improved to 5-2, 1-1.
